Sensory Rooms
In a cosy indoor sensory room designed for children with SEN and a wider appreciation of neurodiversity, Belle and Betty find two very different but equally valuable ways to feel safe and learn: while one child benefits from calm, dimmable lighting, soft seating and gentle tactile panels that helps regulate sensory input, reduce anxiety and settle into focused activities, while the other child responds to brighter colours, interactive textures and gentle movement that stimulate curiosity and support active engagement. The room’s flexible layout, staff-led adaptations and personalised resources mean each child can choose what helps them best, whether a quiet nook for reflection or a lively area for exploration, showing how inclusive design respects individual needs and promotes confidence and learning for everyone.
Inclusive Playground
At Belle and Betty SEN setting our inclusive outdoor playground is carefully designed to celebrate diversity and promote independence for children with a wide range of needs. Wide, level, wheelchair-accessible paths and ramps, tactile and sensory panels, adaptive swings and low-level climbing elements allow physical access and play choice, while quiet, shaded retreats, calming planting and a sensory garden provide places to regulate and reflect. Visual timetables, communication boards and Makaton signing support interaction and understanding, and bespoke play zones are informed by therapists, parents and the children themselves so activities can be differentiated safely. Staff training, clear sightlines and secure fencing ensure supervision and safeguarding, creating a welcoming outdoor space where every child can explore, learn and have fun together.

MESSY PLAY
In the Belle and Betty SEN setting, messy play is an intentional, therapeutic and joyful approach to early years and specialist education that prioritises sensory exploration, communication and individualised support. It gives children with a range of needs safe opportunities to touch, smell, hear and manipulate materials such as water, sand, foam, paint and textured foodstuffs, helping to develop fine and gross motor skills, hand–eye coordination and sensory regulation. Practitioners adapt activities to each child’s profile — for example using firm containers, weighted tools, clear routines, visual cues and glove options — and carry out risk assessments and hygiene plans to maintain safety. Messy play also fosters social interaction, early language, choice-making and emotional expression in a relaxed, inclusive environment. Working closely with families and therapists, staff at Belle and Betty ensure experiences are meaningful, person-centred and enjoyable, celebrating small achievements while building confidence and independence.
Experienced Support Staff
At Belle and Betty SEN setting our dedicated SEN staff provide highly personalised care and education, led by an experienced SENCO and supported by specialist teachers, teaching assistants and therapists; staff undergo regular training in behaviour support, communication strategies and safeguarding to ensure best practice. One-to-one ratios are used flexibly and determined by each child's assessed needs and their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), so some pupils receive full one-to-one support while others benefit from targeted small-group input with additional drop-in support. This approach ensures continuity through keyworkers who build consistent relationships, coordinate interventions and liaise with families and external professionals to review progress. Clear planning, regular risk assessments and outcome monitoring mean staffing levels are kept under constant review to match changing needs, promote independence and enable safe, inclusive participation in all aspects of school life. At Belle and Betty we aim to balance intensive individual support with opportunities for peer interaction so that each child can achieve their potential in a nurturing, well-staffed environment.
